Titanic Comes to Life at Liberty
Third Graders Re-Enact Life Onboard Ship
April 25, 2008
Third graders at Liberty Elementary School studied the Titanic in their reading classes for several weeks. They began their studies by reading several books over the Titanic, including White Star: A Dog on the Titanic. Each student then received a boarding pass with the name of a person on the Titanic for them to research. They made timelines and learned many facts about the ship itself, as well as the people who were aboard the ship when it sank.
Students also learned about the different classes of people who were aboard the Titanic.
They held their own "High Tea", just like the one on the Titanic with tea and cookies. On "High Tea" day, they dressed according to the class they were on the Titanic and were seated for tea in order of their class - 1st class, 2nd class, etc. The passenger list included people like Thomas Andrews - the ship's designer, Madeline Astor, wife of millionaire John Jacob Astor, Ida Strauss - owner of Macy's Department Store, as well as many immigrants who were seeking a better life in America. The third graders studied the Titanic across the curriculum covering the topic in not only reading, but social studies, math, and vocabulary as well. They also had lots of fun learning about an important part of history!!!
