USD #499 Students Bring TONS of Food for 60 Thanksgiving Baskets

Thanks to the generosity of the USD #499 students, parents, and faculty the Galena High School Student Council was able to put together 60 Thanksgiving food baskets for Galena students and their families.  Each basket consisted of a turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, stuffing, yams, and cranberry sauce for a Thanksgiving meal, as well as other food items such as canned veggies, pasta, mac and cheese, etc.  All of the food baskets started out with approximately the same items.  Due to the overwhelmingly awesome number of items that were collected during the food drive, families were also able to choose some items more specific to their families when they came in to pick up their baskets.

During the month of November STUCO assigned point values to each food item and then held a district wide competition to see which class could earn the most points for bringing in the food items, with the top six classes receiving parties.  The class bringing in the most points, with a whopping 1748 points was Ms. Jessica Shank's high school seminar class.  Coming in second place was Mrs. Suzette Henderson's 4th grade class with 1242 points.  Rounding off the top three was Mrs. Brianna Miller's 2nd grade class with 1010 points.  Fourth place went to Mrs. Amber Spencer's high school seminar class, with Ms. Sydney Shannon's seminar class coming in a close fifth and Ms. Danielle Murphy's 2nd grade class closing out the top sixth position.  Students in these classes earned parties for their efforts:  1st and 2nd places earned pizza parties, 3rd & 4th places earned pop parties, and 5th & 6th places earned candy bar parties.

Student Council would like to thank everyone that participated in our food drive and helped make the lives of 60 of our Galena families a little easier this holiday season!!!!
