USD #499 Students and Faculty Work Together to Provide Food Baskets

Students and faculty members throughout the USD #499 school district worked together to gather enough items to make over 60 Thanksgiving food baskets to be handed out to families of Galena students prior to the Thanksgiving break.  A district wide competition was held where the classes competed to see who could bring the most food points with items such as potatoes, gravy, stuffing, etc., receiving the highest points since they are part of the traditional Thanksgiving meal.  The top six classes raising the most points received the following rewards:  1st and 2nd places - Pizza party, 3rd and 4th places - Pop party, and 5th and 6th places - Candy Bar party.  With a whopping 1,751 points, Mrs. Suzette Henderson's 4th grade class took the top honors this year.  Second place honors were rewarded to Ms. Jessica Shank's seminar class with 1,539 points.  Mrs. Tabitha McQuillan's 6th grade seminar and Mrs. Jamie Smith's 3rd grade class earned 3rd and 4th places in that order.  Rounding out the top six places were Mrs. Tara Bailey's Reading and Math classes earning 5th place and Mrs. Debbie Krouse's 5th grade class earning 6th place.

The Thanksgiving Food Drive was organized by the Galena High School Student Council.  STUCO would like to thank Jacob LaTurner, a former GHS STUCO member and current Kansas State Treasurer for donating all of the turkeys for the Thanksgiving food baskets.  STUCO would also like to thank all of the students, parents, and faculty members that helped make the Thanksgiving Food Drive a success!!!!
