GHS Kicks Off School Year With Connect Activities

Galena High School kicked off the 2019-20 school year with various activities held throughout the first day of school.  Seniors, juniors, and sophomores attended class meetings, took a Career Cruising career test, and participated in bus evacuations throughout the morning while the freshmen students and their mentors, known as Connectors, got to know each other as part of the Connect Mentorship program.

The Connect program was implemented during the 2012-13 school year with the purpose of helping incoming freshmen students to make a smoother transition from middle school to high school. The freshman class is divided into 11 seminar groups with usually 5-8 students per group. Each of these groups (Connect Crews) is assigned two or three Connectors that are responsible for mentoring the freshmen and helping them with homework, questions, etc. The Connectors are chosen based on their application, testing scores, and teacher/administrator recommendations. The Connectors met their Connect Crews on the first

day of school and spent the first two hours getting to know them, showing them around campus, and participating in team building activities. The Connectors and their Connect Crews are in the same seminar class giving them ample time to “connect.”   The Connectors will serve as mentors to the freshmen for the remainder of the school year.

Following the morning's Connect and class activities, the new superintendent, Dr. Trey Moeller interacted with the students and spoke to them about having a positive school year.  Students then went through a shortened class schedule to give them the opportunity to meet with each teacher and find out what supplies would be needed for the class.

Welcome back students!!!  We are looking forward to a great 2019-20 school year!!!
