Mock Accident Held at GHS

The Galena High School Student Council sponsored a Mock Accident on Wednesday, April 12th.  The purpose of a Mock Accident is to promote awareness of possible consequences for a person who drives distracted, under the influence, or underage.  It is our hope that students will think twice before choosing to drive in one of these ways after seeing a real-life scenario of the possible consequences.  Upon the completion of the Mock Accident, students were given the opportunity to view and talk to the EMS workers associated with the MedFlight helicopter, ambulance, fire truck, and police car.  They were also able to meet a police K-9 officer, take a turn on the golf cart with drinking and driving goggles or high goggles, and visit a table set up by the Spring River Mental Health & Wellness Center.  At the end of the day, students gathered in the new gym to listen to Sheriff David Groves and District Magistrate Judge Doug Steele talk about the legal consequences of driving while distracted or impaired and to do short question and answer sessions.  Lynette Downing ended the afternoons activities with a few words about how activities like this can affect a person's mental health.

The GHS STUCO would like to thank the following entities for participating in the Mock Accident with them:  Galena Fire Department, Galena Police Department, Cherokee County Sheriff's Department, Cherokee County EMS, Derfelt Funeral Home, Kansas Highway Patrol, MedFlight, KSN TV, Midwest Emergency Photography, Spring River Mental Health & Wellness Center, and Justice Doug Steele.
